 THE MAROONS OF JAMAICA

The Windward Maroons live today through their offspring who hold high the Banner of Maroonage “freedom or death”. The Buff Bay Valley, home to the Charles Town Maroons was the 18th Century theatre for the drama of resistance and survival. Their victory against British colonialism and plantation slavery allowed for the retention to a large degree of this knowledge of resistance and survival.

Survival - In those times resistance was synonymous with survival …  and many of the tools of survival are today still in use throughout the valley. These include the art of living from the land, of ancestral worship and the use of drumming rituals to invoke their intervention; the use of herbs for health and healing, for malice and for warfare.  Come share with the communities of the corridor these traditions of survival; visit the Asafu Yard “the ceremonial ground of the Maroons”, the Maroon Museum and the nearby Herb Museum and Garden.

Surveyed in 1739 the Orangevale Coffee Factory and Great House ruins stand today unequalled in grandeur among such structures within the Caribbean; a testimony to the fact that while sugar was king on the plains, in the hills of the Blue Mountains, it was coffee that reigned supreme.
